I Am Dance, Inc is on a mission to change the world, one dance at a time. Our purpose is to educate and entertain through the art of dance and dance performance. As a performance dance company we offer original programming that aims to entertain while bringing enlightenment around social issues that impact our world daily.
I Am Dance, Inc. was originally formed in Detroit, MI, by founder Shari E. Smith. The company initially offered dance workshops featuring celebrity choreographers. It was a platform for local dancers to network amongst each other and provide opportunities to dancers that were looking to take their dance career to the next level. We brought New York and L.A. to Detroit.
With today's societal issues, Shari felt a calling to address them. After struggling to determine in which manner to get involved, she was hit with an epiphany. She realized she was to use her love and passion for dance to speak out and address this issues. This has become the current purpose of the non-profit, I Am Dance., Inc.
Shari, a native Detroiter, was introduced to dance at the age of 4 at her daycare. She began formal training at age 6 at Diane Bland’s School of Dance where she studied Ballet, Modern, Jazz, Tap, Gymnastics, Baton and African Dance. Shari studied at DBSD for several years in addition to taking classes at Marygrove College, Cass Technical High School, Tuskegee University, Harvenger Dance Company, and others. As a teenager, she taught Creative Movement and Beginner’s Ballet to children 11 and under and became Captain of her high school Majorette team. With a natural knack for Hip-Hop, she choreographed and danced background for local hip-hop artists and participated in several talent competitions and showcases.
Shari strayed away from her initial love, obtained an Electrical Engineering Degree from Tuskegee University and went into corporate America. Shari felt a void in her life. Her creativity was not being fed and she began to feel empty. After several years, she left corporate America and established her own companies including 20/20 Entertainment, I Am Dance and a non-profit, Shut Up N Dance. She began to teach dance, provide choreography, and artist development for several acts, and offer dance workshops featuring celebrity choreographers. She also worked on major marketing projects, through Perfectly Produced, where she was the lead for marketing major artists such as John Legend, Destiny’s Child, Lyfe Jennings and Vivian Green.
Shari moved to Atlanta in January 2008 where she is growing her business and sharing her love of dance with any and everyone that will allow her. The goal of her companies is to create opportunities for dreams to come true for those interested in performing arts and make a difference one dance at at time. .
